It’s Fat Tuesday, and Democrats are preparing a financial feast on Virginian’s wallets. Hope you’ve got $600,000 laying around…
A number of Virginia Democrats are backing Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s Green New Deal. The plan — which includes rebuilding every structure in America for energy efficiency, stopping cow farts, and curbing air travel — would be a radical overhaul of virtually every sector of the economy.
The plan could cost as much as $93 Trillion dollars over 10 years. For comparison, economists peg the total value of all goods and services changing hands in U.S. every year — the size of the entire economy — is under $20 trillion. The entire world economy is roughly $80 trillion per year.
Democrat Del. Sam Rasoul defended the program while slamming “pragmatic” politicians. From his post on Blue Virginia:
“The Green New Deal is not just an idealistic environmental plan. It is the realization that in order to uplift all, we must forge new coalitions at the intersectionality of economic, social, and environmental justice. Fighting for good in our silos feels futile at times, but once united around the fundamental principle of equity, together we become a political force to be reckoned with.”
“Over the next two years, stale thoughts will come from candidates who want to look pragmatic. But those voices are simply defending the same neoliberal ideas which created our current economic and social disparities. As Albert Einstein stated, ‘we cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.’ People must know what our party stands for leading into November 2019 and 2020, and the Green New Deal ensures that working and vulnerable families are uplifted in the fight ahead.”
Democrats Gerry Connolly and Bobby Scott are already co-sponsors of Ocasio-Cortez’s resolution, and 14 members of the Virginia General Assembly have signed on to the Virginia Green New Deal, along with more than a dozen Democrat legislative candidates.
“Virginia Democrats are quickly adopting the same pie-in-the-sky progressive pipe dreams that their D.C. counterparts are selling. Anytime a Democrat tells you that ‘pragmatism’ is problematic, hold on to your wallet.” — Garren Shipley, RNC spokesman
