Leader Gilbert: “Are Democrats Blocking Hearings to Protect Their Preferred Candidate for Governor?”

House Majority Leader Todd Gilbert issued the following statement in response to a Richmond Times-Dispatch article which reports Democrat Lt. Governor Justin Fairfax is considering a run for Governor believing the sexual assault scandal has “raised his public profile for good:”

“As Yogi Berra once said, some things are too coincidental to be a coincidence. The fact that Democrats have once again refused to honor the request of two survivors of sexual assault, and hold a bipartisan hearing to let the Lt. Governor’s accusers be heard, at the same time that Lt. Governor Fairfax announces that he may indeed run for Governor in 2021 raises serious questions.

“Governor Northam, Lt. Governor Fairfax, and Attorney General Herring have all attempted to ride out their scandals by keeping their heads down and waiting. House Democrats’ refusal to hold a bipartisan hearing appears to be a coordinated part of that strategy.

“Do House Democrats support Lt. Governor Fairfax? If they are acting to protect their preferred candidate for Governor from public scrutiny at the expense of two brave women who simply want to tell their stories, it would represent the worst kind of politics. I sincerely hope that this isn’t the case.”

The Richmond Times-Dispatch also points out, “The two women have for months requested a public hearing before the General Assembly, where they could testify under oath about their allegations. Fairfax and Democrats in the General Assembly have sought to block efforts by Republicans to hold the hearing”
