Today, we celebrate the 154th anniversary of Juneteenth, a day of remembrance in our nation’s history marking the end of slavery. The contributions of African Americans to our society cannot be overstated, and we honor their sacrifices made for the freedoms and liberties that all Americans enjoy today.
2019 marks the 400th anniversary of slaves coming to Virginia. 400 years ago, human beings were ripped from their homes and taken to a foreign land with no hope of freedom. But 154 years ago, Virginia and our nation started on the path to recovery. While progress has been made, more can and must be done to achieve racial reconciliation. We hope that all Virginians take a moment and observe the importance of this day.
