• Meet the GOP: Lolita’s Story

When Lolita Mancheno-Smoak realized her community wasn’t headed in the right direction, she didn’t LolitaSB Bluecomplain about it.

    She decided to change it.

Mancheno-Smoak is the Fairfax County Republican Committee’s 3rd Vice Chairman, Community Engagement, as a volunteer with the Republican Party of Virginia, she works to connect with all types of voters and get out the vote in Fairfax County. Her goal is simple: introduce Northern Virginia’s diverse communities to the principles of the Republican Party.

“It is hard work. The shocked look in  folks who see Latinos, Asians, and Blacks that are Republicans makes it all worth it. They say ‘why are you here?’ and we show them why we are there and share our message,” Mancheno-Smoak said.

Passion for principles and people is what keeps Mancheno-Smoak working, no matter the weather.

“I believe in the principles of the Republican Party and I think that here in Fairfax County especially, there is not enough understanding about what are the fundamental truths and direct differences between the Republican and Democratic Parties especially within the Latino community,” she said.

“I have a passion for making sure that changes and that is what I am involved in now. We need to be present and involved in every community in Fairfax. You have to invest time. You can’t just show up and say vote for me. It takes more than that. It takes respect and valuing enough to build long term relationships.”

As Republicans work to earn votes in every community around the Commonwealth, volunteers like Mancheno-Smoak are carrying the ideas of the Virginia Republican Creed into new communities.

“I enjoy sticking my neck out and being aggressive in engaging with diverse communities to try to earn votes and excite support,” she said. “Representing our local diversity is especially important in Virginia and also on a national level. Having Republicans in places of high visibility and leadership that reflect the richness of our diverse communities is so important.”

Above all, she said, the effort is about commitment — commitment to community, country, and principles. After all, unless Republicans are willing to engage with more communities over the long term, no effort to win votes will succeed.

“Sacrificing a weekend to just meet strangers is hard unless you have a real will,” she said. “People say they are willing to do things, but when it’s time to get the work done,  then you really see who is committed.”

  • FACES OF THE GOP: Sang Yi, Candidate 37th District House of Delegates

Sang Yi’s life story is an example of the American Dream.

Sang Yi immigrated to the United States from South Korea in the 1980’s. With humble beginnings in their new lives in America, Sang’s parents sought out success to improve their family’s station in life. Sang’s parents worked hard and were able to start their first small business, a neighborhood market.

Witnessing firsthand how the American Dream can become a reality, Sang developed a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunities our great nation had to offer. With a sense of pride and desire to give back to the country that has given his family so much, Sang enrolled in the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Upon graduation, he received his commission in the U.S. Navy Reserve and he currently serves as a Lieutenant Commander. He continued his education at the U.S. Naval War College for graduate school, and received his law degree from George Washington University Law School.

Sang is also active in his community, having served as the President of his Homeowners Association, Second Vice Commander of American Legion Post 177 in the City of Fairfax, and as a member of the Lions Club and Freemasons. He is an appointed policy board member for the Fairfax Alcohol Safety Action Program (ASAP) and is a member of the Asian American Chamber of Commerce. Sang’s dedication to better his community will make him the best possible Delegate to represent the 37th District.

Face_sangyi_profileHaving worked in the executive branch at a Defense Department intelligence agency as well as in the legislative branch on Capitol Hill, Sang has the experience and qualifications to represent the 37th District in Virginia’s House of Delegates. We need people with Sang’s experience who are devoted to serving their communities.

Sang’s dedication to his family, the Commonwealth, and to the nation has led him to seek public office. He has the courage to take on an entrenched incumbent and I know that he has the work ethic, community ties, and background to win in November. I am excited and proud to support Sang, and I ask that everyone else do the same.

  • Amanda Chase, candidate for the 11th State Senate District

Amanda Freeman Chase, Republican candidate for the Virginia State Senate for District 11, grew up in Chesterfield County, is married to her high school sweetheart, and is a mother to four teenagers.

She is a small business owner and has worked in both the private and public sectors.  Chase is a graduate of Monacan High School and of Virginia Tech, graduating in the top ten percent of her class, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business, double majoring in Corporate Finance and Business Management.

After graduation, Chase married her husband of 22 years, and began a career in the banking, credit, and finance industry.  During this time Chase worked for Fortune 500 companies such as Circuit City and Capital One, as well as in state government under Gov. George Allen. Chase was serving in a management position at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, when she made the decision to stay home with her children while they were young. She then embarked on a new chapter of her life and began homeschooling her four children for the next 9 years. All of her children are now teenagers and currently attend or have graduated from Chesterfield County public schools.  Her oldest currently attends, and is on the President’s List, at James Madison University.  Her family worships at Clover Hill Assembly of God.

During this time, Chase became the neighborhood swim coach and was made aware of a local zoning issue that affected the safety of the children in her neighborhood.  She served on a neighborhood steering committee that led efforts in the neighborhood to protect the community, and they were successful in their efforts.
This sparked her determination to be engaged in grassroots issues, and over the years she quickly rose to leadership positions working for Congressman Randy Forbes, Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, Governor Bob McDonnell and former Majority Leader Congressman Eric Cantor.
Chase soon began a campaign management company to help principled grassroots conservatives run for office.  She helped 23 different candidates in their races for local, state and federal offices. This along with her financial services business that she began with her husband in 2013 has kept her busy and out in the community meeting people in the 11th District.
AC_headshotChase has a reputation for getting the job done.  She understands the demands and challenges of growing a business, generating revenue and will work hard to protect small business owners by looking for ways to lower taxes and eliminate fees that hurt small businesses.

To learn more about her campaign, visit her website at http://www.chase4senate.com or contact them via email.

“I’m in touch with what everyday families are going through.  Whether I’m sitting in the bleachers watching my kids play ball or sitting across the kitchen table from a couple wanting to improve their financial situation; I get it because I live it.  Once in the state senate, I will advocate for the people who are tired of electing people who use the position as a tool to advance themselves or their business.  My job is to represent the people and put the interests of the people that I serve ahead of my own.”

  • FACES OF THE GOP: Tony Pham, candidate Commonwealth’s Attorney, Henrico County

    faces-of-the-gop

Many people today talk about “the American Dream” in passing. However, for Tony Pham the Dream is a reality because he’s known what it is like to live without freedom and opportunity.

His family fled Vietnam in 1975 as it fell to communist control. They lived in a refugee camp in Arkansas before relocating and beginning their new lives in Henrico County, Virginia. Tony’s family always concentrated on bettering their situation through education – a lesson Tony took to heart. He completed his undergraduate work at the College of William and Mary in 1995, then went on to graduate from the T.C. Williams School of Law at the University of Richmond in 1999.

After law school, Tony secured a judicial clerkship in Henrico County Circuit Court. Desiring to advocate and fight for victims of crimes, Tony then went on to serve as an Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney in the City of Richmond – before being chosen to serve as a Special Assistant United States Attorney in the U.S. Attorney’s Office. While in this position, Tony focused on issues of public safety, including prosecuting illegal weapons charges and narcotics trafficking.

Tony’s experience and dedication led him to managing the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office in Manchester (Southside Richmond), supervising other attorneys and support staff. Additionally, he served as the lead attorney on numerous homicide cases in the area. Due to his success in this post, Tony was asked to lead Richmond’s first ever gang unit task force, charged with prosecuting and dismantling area gangs. After his time as a gang prosecutor, Tony transitioned to the City Attorney’s office as their Public Safety Attorney. In 2010, Tony became the only serving counsel to a constitutionally-elected law enforcement officer when he became the General Counsel for the Sheriff of the City of Richmond; he is still serving in this capacity today.

Tony possesses an impeccable work ethic, strength of conviction, and passion for bettering his community. His professional and personal accomplishments have earned him recognition by Virginia Lawyer’s Weekly as a “Leader in the Law,” in addition to a spot on Style Weekly’s “Top 40 Under 40.” Recognizing his professionalism and fairness, the Virginia Supreme Court also appointed Tony to serve on the Virginia State Bar’s Disciplinary Board.

More important than his professional accomplishments, however, are Tony’s roles as a husband and father. He has been married to his lovely wife, Tara, for fourteen years, and they have two bright young children. His race has truly been a “Phamily affair,” as his children are often out with Tony – walking neighborhoods and visiting with voters.

Faces_TP_2Tony’s campaign has focused on the principles of “Leadership, Commitment, and Courage” – the principles he has followed in both his personal and professional interactions. For Tony, it isn’t just about leading – it’s about leading by example. As a long-time member of the Henrico County Republican Committee, Tony has worked tirelessly to help elect Republican candidates throughout Virginia. His example proves that he is the right person to fight for all of Henrico County – including the next generation. Tony regularly works with the Rule of Law Program in Richmond and Henrico, teaching students about law and order in our society. He also volunteers with Coaches in the Classroom , in order to help children build a stronger foundation to make better life choices. As the next Commonwealth’s Attorney, he has a vision for continuing to build networks that focus on holistic community involvement, nurturing mutual trust and respect between officials and their communities, and early intervention.

Henrico has been identified as the county that will dictate whether or not Virginia will “go Red”. We need a new, energetic Republican leader in the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office who can help guide Henrico in 2016 and beyond. Please donate $5, $10, $25 or $50 now to help the GOP succeed in Henrico County.

Since 2013 she has also served on the Virginia Board of Medicine enforcing standards of practice to ensure safe and competent patient care.

  • FACES OF THE GOP: Jason Miyares, Candidate House of Delegates – 82nd District

Jason Miyares and his family are an example of how American is truly the land of opportunity.

Jason’s story begins with his mother Miriam Maria Miyares, who fled communist Cuba in 1965 with only the clothes on her back. She legally immigrated to the United States and instilled in her three sons a passionate love of freedom and democracy. Jason Miyares grew up in Virginia Beach, attended local public schools through high school, received his undergraduate degree from James Madison University and attended law school at the College of William & Mary.

Jason proudly served the people of Virginia Beach as an Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney. He worked to keep violent offenders off our street – he successfully prosecuted over six hundred criminals and had a conviction rate of ninety percent. After his tenure in the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s office, Jason worked with Congress ScoJM_Headtt Rigell as a senior advisor and counselor for the last five years.

Jason Miyares is the Republican nominee for the House of Delegates in the 82nd District in Virginia Beach.  His primary goal is to make Hampton Roads the number one place in the nation for entrepreneurs to create jobs and expand their businesses.  Jason will pursue policies that support our local job creators instead of punishing them, promote a leaner, more effective regulatory climate, and shield our business owners from frivolous lawsuits.
