Roanoke County Republican Party Canvass

 

As Chairman of the Roanoke County Republican Committee, and pursuant to the Plan of Organization and as recommended and directed by the Committee, I, Ashley Suetterlein, do hereby issue this call for a Party Canvass to be held at South County Library, located at 6303 Merriman Road, Roanoke, Virginia. from 3 PM to 7 PM local time on Tuesday, May 30, 2023 for the purpose of nominating a Republican candidate for the office of Roanoke County Commissioner of Revenue, to be voted on in the General Election to be held on November, 7, 2023.

 

Qualifications for Participation in the Canvass

All legal and qualified voters of Roanoke County under the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia, regardless of race, religion, national origin or sex, who are in accord with the principles of the Republican Party, and who, if requested, express in public meeting either orally or in writing as may be required, their intent to support all of its nominees for public office in the ensuing election, may participate as members of the Republican Party of Virginia in its mass meetings, party canvasses, conventions or primaries encompassing their respective election districts.

 

A voter who, subsequent to making a statement of intent, publicly supports a candidate in opposition to a Republican nominee shall not be qualified for participation in party actions as defined in the Republican Party of Virginia Plan of Organization’s Article I for a period of four (4) years.

 

In addition to the foregoing, to be in accord with the principles of the Republican Party, unless otherwise stipulated by the appropriate Official Committee, a person otherwise qualified hereunder shall not have participated in Virginia in the nomination process of a party other than the Republican Party within the last five years. A single exception to this shall be approved for a voter that renounces affiliation with any other party in writing, and who expresses in writing that he/she is in accord with the principles of the Republican Party and intends, at the time of the writing, to support the nominees of the Republican Party in the future. Any voter that utilizes the foregoing exception, and thereafter participates in the nomination process of a party other than the Republican Party, shall not have the benefit of the exception identified in this paragraph thereafter.

 

Voting Location

Voting will take place in Meeting Room 1 at South County Library, located at 6303 Merriman Road, Roanoke, Virginia.

 

Candidate Filing Requirements

Candidates for the Republican nomination of Commissioner of Revenue at the canvass shall file a written statement of candidacy (on an official prefiling form) in person with Chairman Ashley Suetterlein not later than 5:00 pm on Thursday, April 6, 2023. Prefiling forms shall be available online at www.virginia.gop or from Chairman Suetterlein. Candidate statements must be accompanied by a $2,000 filing fee on a check made payable to the Roanoke County Republican Committee. The candidate statement shall include affirmative declarations of (1) his or her intent to support the Republican Party’s nominee in the 2023 General Election and (2) signifying that if he or she is not successful in receiving the nomination of the Republican Party, he or she will not allow his or her name to be printed on the ballot for the November 7, 2023 General Election.

 

If only one candidate properly files, then said candidate shall be declared the Republican nominee and no canvass will be held.

 

Conduct of the Canvass

Voters offering to vote must be properly registered in Roanoke County, must present a government issued photo ID. Each voter must also sign a statement of intent to support the Republican Party’s nominees on November 7, 2023. Persons who do not meet these requirements will not be allowed to participate.

 

Rules for the conduct of the Canvass will be promulgated by the Roanoke County Republican Committee and will be available online at www.virginia.gop.

 

Registration Fee

There is no registration fee to vote in this canvass.
