Top Virginia Democrat Floats Abolishing Virginia Redistricting Commission, Gerrymandering Virginia “Just Like California”

Virginia Democrats are continuing their efforts to turn our Commonwealth into “California East,” this time by abolishing the Virginia Redistricting Commission so that Democrats can draw hyper-partisan electoral maps and permanently gerrymander Republicans out of power.

On Wednesday, former President Barack Obama published a dangerous post urging Democrats nationwide to follow California’s lead in defying the will of voters to draw even more gerrymandered maps.

Virginia Senate President Pro Tempore Louise Lucas was quick to answer the call, responding to President Obama to “stay tuned for Virginia.”

There should be no doubt about what this is: a blatant promise by Lucas and Virginia Democrats that they will abolish the Virginia Redistricting Commission and draw convoluted new districts that effectively disenfranchise millions of Republican voters. It is nothing but a dangerous and undemocratic power grab.

The Virginia Redistricting Commission was just established by voters in 2020. A supermajority of voters (66%) backed the ballot initiative establishing the Commission. Now, just five years later, Lucas and her Democrat allies have decided that their political ambitions are more important than the wishes of 2.7 million Virginia voters.

When Virginia voters head to the ballot box on November 4, they should understand that they are voting for the future of redistricting in our Commonwealth. Will legislative districts be drawn by the redistricting commission, as voters clearly said they wanted in 2020, or will they be drawn by Louise Lucas and partisan hacks in Richmond?
