Winsome Sears Wins Republican LG Nomination
Richmond, VA – Today, Winsome Sears won the Republican Party of Virginia’s lieutenant governor nomination. She will carry the Republican Party banner across the Commonwealth as the Republican candidate for lieutenant governor on the November 2nd ballot. Sears joins Gubernatorial nominee Glenn Youngkin and Attorney General nominee Jason Miyares on the Republican ticket.
In 2001, Winsome was elected to a majority Black legislative district, a historic achievement that no other Virginia Republican has done since 1865. She consequently also became the first (and still only) Black Republican woman elected to the House, the first female veteran, and the first legal immigrant woman.
Winsome is a mother, wife, and military veteran who served in the United States Marine Corps. She was also a hard-charging Vice President of the Virginia State Board of Education and received presidential appointments to the US Census Bureau (where she co-chaired the African American Committee) and the Advisory Committee on Women Veterans to the Secretary of Veterans Affairs.
In addition to her Masters degree, Winsome also built a successful business as a trained electrician and understands the importance of helping small businesses thrive. However, Winsome is most proud of her community work in leading a men’s prison ministry and as director of a women’s homeless shelter for The Salvation Army.
Winsome is running to sustain Republican Party principles on the value human life and dignity, equal opportunity, protection of the Second Amendment, lower taxes, encouraging entrepreneurship, and giving educational choices to parents and families. Winsome understands the importance of expanding the Republican Party of Virginia to include new voters, especially in building relationships with the Hispanic community and bringing conservative African Americans into the Republican Party.
Republican Party of Virginia Chairman Rich Anderson offered the following statement:
“It is with great pride that I can finally announce our entire Republican ticket. Glenn Youngkin, Winsome Sears, and Jason Miyares will make incredible additions to the executive branch of Virginia state government. Together, they will provide much needed relief to Virginians across the Commonwealth from the disastrous policies of the McAuliffe-Northam administrations. Winsome is a fantastic candidate and I and Virginia Republicans cannot wait to see her and the entire team on the campaign trail.
“I sincerely thank Lance Allen, Tim Hugo, Maeve Rigler, Glenn Davis, and Puneet Ahluwalia for their devotion to public service and for sacrificing their time and energy to engage in this arduous process. The Republican Party of Virginia is proud of these outstanding Republican leaders and urges them to remain in the fight to make life better for all Virginians.
“Our convention could not have gone smoother. From day one, our volunteers, staff, and the 17 statewide campaigns worked seamlessly together to pull off what seemed to many to be an impossible task – but “impossible” is not a word in the Republican lexicon. The level of commitment by our ballot tellers at the RPV State Convention was exemplified by their dedication to the principles of fairness, accuracy, transparency, and honesty. Their contributions over the last three days were unrivaled by any election in modern history. I have never been more proud of our Party.
“As I have said at the conclusion of each of these races, it is time for Virginians to unite behind our Republican ticket. Virginia is poised to take back the executive branch and the Virginia House of Delegates. It is fitting and right that our first Republican President, Abraham Lincoln, spoke against a house divided. Together – and only together – can Virginia Republicans end the multiple and endless failures of Richmond Democrats.”
