Republican Party of Virginia Statement on Virginia Democrats’ Radical Bills

Richmond, Virginia – November 20, 2023

Today, after running an entire campaign on “maintaining the status quo,” Virginia Democrats introduced a slate of radical bills that would upend existing law and turn our Commonwealth into a failed left-wing state like California or New York.

Their very first order of business was to introduce an amendment that would enshrine a right to unrestricted late-term abortion-on-demand in the Virginia Constitution. Despite Democrat House leader Don Scott explicitly telling the Virginian-Pilot that “the goal is for [abortion] laws to remain the same” before the election, Democrats are now seeking to make abortion at any stage of pregnancy legal for any reason – a far more radical policy than the existing limit of 26 weeks.

Next, Virginia Democrats introduced a bill increasing the minimum wage to $15 per hour, a move that would completely destroy all the economic progress we’ve seen over the past two years under Governor Youngkin. Similar failed experiments in other states have cost millions of jobs and hampered growth. Liberal left-wing talking points don’t make good policies, and Virginians deserve economic strategies with a proven track record of success.

A third bill would restrict Virginians’ Second Amendment Freedoms, part of a broader effort by national Democrats to take away the right of the American people to protect themselves. While Democrats continue to let criminals roam our streets, they are doing everything they can to bully, intimidate, and harass law-abiding gun owners who simply want to protect themselves and their property.

This radical slate of bills is more proof that Democrats have no interest in serving the people of Virginia – they are only concerned with appeasing their far-left activist base and ultra-rich donors.

Republicans will continue to use every tool at our disposal to push back against these and other disastrous policies that are not in the best interests of our Commonwealth.
